Tāla

Tāla
Refers to metric organization in Indian classical music and also the named metric pattern for a particular composition (e.g. tīntāl). The specific tāla is defined by the number of duration units and the manner of their subdivision into smaller groupings. The tāla organizes and constrains the improvisation on the rāga insofar as structural pitches must coordinate with certain counts of the tāla.
